Just yesterday, I was looking at a reflection of myself and commented once again to myself about the weight I have been gaining. I said to myself, "Man, you need to lose some weight!" The comment was no different than the comments of times past except for what happened afterwards. It was as if someone said to me on the other side of my comment, "You worry more about not being overweight than you do about being fit." I thought about it and had to agree.
I speak often of doing what I can do to lose weight but seldom concern myself with what I should to become fit. You see, everyone who is lean is not necessarily fit.
I did not stop with that. I considered how it is that many of us approach our character the same way. We worry more about our characters not being overweight than we do about them being fit. So many of us have lean character....but are they fit?
We are losing weight when we speak words that seem to suggest we are good men and good women. But do we live lives that are consistent with the words we speak? The lifestyle is the true reflection of fitness.
God's prophet spoke of a people who would 'honor Him with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him.'
Let us do more to develop our characters and worry less about what we do for others to see. If we rightly develop our characters, others will see that we are not only lean but we are also fit.
Remember, character is who we are when no one is watching.
