William Saunders Crowdy was a visionary who experienced the crippling chains of slavery; yet, saw a bright future for his people anchored in faith, fellowship, hard work, goodwill and charity.

He laid the foundation for a church, a small city of homes, farms, a widows’ and orphans’ home, schools, and a solid network of viable businesses. Imagine this all Black city out performing its neighboring towns through the trying years of the 1900s. It is robust. It is a Mecca for the disenfranchised.

It thrives despite the oppression of Jim Crow Laws, male labor snatching World Wars, the austerity of The Great Depression; and, do imagine, all of this against the backdropand terrain of an inhospitable South. There is purity in purpose at work on this land.

Pearls of Our History

  • Through the ages, the Church of God and Saints of Christ has always been committed to aiding and promoting wellness within the community.
  • Entities such as the Belleville Widows and Orphans Home, which provide housing and care for widows and orphans.
  • The Belleville Industrial School provided educational opportunities for all to learn a trade.
  • The Levi Solomon Plummer Learning Center provided early education to children.

Crowdy’s inspiration echoes today through the efforts of a community conscious group of developers. The development group has protected the original purchase and increased the holdings to include:

  • Tax credit apartments, affordable single-family homes
  • Senior living facilities and land leases for other businesses geared to uplifting and enhancing the lives of neighboring communities
  • Every Member Capital Campaign (EMCC) on-line giving is offered for your privacy and convenience

Today we continue to promote wellness within multiple levels of the community by:

  • providing low-income housing for families
  • subsidized housing for senior citizens
  • emergency and ambulatory care through a partnership with Sentara Hospital
  • upscale residential rental opportunities for moderate-income families and senior citizens.
